THE ASK —

After winning a Shopify Commerce Award for Best Mobile Commerce Experience, the Shopify Hardware team approached us to help them redesign their online store. The overall goal of the project was to better align the long-term vision for Shopify Hardware and POS as the single point of connection, stability and omni-channel commerce for Shopify merchants who are on a direct path to reaching enterprise scale while leveling up the eCommerce experience into a hybrid funnel of research, support, inspiration and transaction that surpasses Shopify's direct competitors in the payments hardware space.

WHAT WE DID & HIGHLIGHTS —

When we first engaged with Shopify, our primary tasks focused on taking a huge amount of user research, business analytics, internal and merchant interviews and use them as inputs build a design strategy that supported the overall business vision for Shopify Hardware, Shopify POS and their omnichannel ecosystem as whole.

We nailed down the overall strategy through an early succession of rapid and iterative sprints full of UX sketching, visual exploration and a strong strategic vision & pillars. This approach allowed us early freedom to test our findings, validate assumptions, get internal buy-in and model out our ideas for what the online store-to-product funnel might look like for engagement, leads & sales.

With the dynamism of digital retail beginning to bleed into physical spaces, we designed the new Shopify Hardwar experience around the core promises of configurability, extensibility, flexibility and stability. Each merchant story, touchpoint, product breakdown, technical spec and sales moment ladders up to the promise that Shopify's physical payments ecosystem of kits, custom bundles, systems and components form the best omnichannel backbone for brands looking to scale up.

WHAT WE DID & HIGHLIGHTS —

In order to establish itself as a strong contender making moves in the payments hardware space, we knew that the new Shopify Hardware site needed to look the part.

Our overall design language used Shopify's Polaris design system as a starting point and evolved it with inspiration from consumer electronics & tech, high-end retail, DTC eCommerce and digital-first storytelling.

This design approach enabled us a lot of freedom to highlight the physical design & form details of the latest generation of Shopify Hardware, turn merchant features into immersive shoppable moments, showcase the technical details and unique attributes in visually elevated way and push the overall experience into a new paradigm that brings the power of B2B sales together with the power of consumer-focused UX and Shopify's cultural narrative & celebration of modern entrepreneurship.
