An exuberant ecommerce experience designed to ignite joy.

THE CONTEXT —

The brand behind Benetint, The POREfessional, BADgal BANG!, Benefit believes that beauty should lift people up and make them feel good. Their ecommerce experience is key to the successful delivery of this brand ethos, and Pattern was brought on to help bring their refresh brand to life while at the same time evolving their UX and UI design system to drive significantly improved metrics and ROI.

KEY CHALLENGES  —

01. Brand Evolution
One of the primary drivers of this engagement was a top-to-bottom brand evolution that Benefit had just completed. Due to the time it takes for packaging and physical retail to turn over, the ecommerce experience became the primary launch vehicle for the reinvigorated Benefit Cosmetics brand.

02. Platform Upgrade & Experience Innovation
The Benefit Cosmetics digital business was running on an older version of Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and their team was keen to take advantage of new features. Our design process needed to take this into account along with a roadmap of features like mobile-first bundle building, dynamic personalization, immersive category experiences and seamless digital to in-store service offerings.

03. Segregated Content
To fully bring to life the Benefit brand promise within the ecommerce environment, the segmentation of branded content and product differentiation had to be eliminated. A key strategic pillar driving our design strategy was the integration of immersive content and rich interactions, scaled across the customer journey and applied intentionally to key touchpoints and shopping moments.

OUR EXPERIENCE STRATEGY —

Pattern and Benefit shared a core belief that the new site should create a strong sense of place: an environment of belonging that fuses exuberance, boldness, fun and unexpectedness into a cohesive user experience — one that’s primed and ready to help anyone who visits find their way to what they need, and maybe find a little bit of themselves in the process.

DESIGN APPROACH  —

The overall design strategy for the new Benefit Cosmetics ecommerce site was to elevate the experience beyond sales and transactions and ignite joy through interactions and own-able digital expressions.

Our design process in general embodies this kind of approach, and it served us well in executing it across everything customers need & want from Benefit — from crafting UX that sells more products, to educational moments around Benefit's in-store services, to driving more foot traffic, or even just serving up more smiles.
